Tay Blanket
This beautiful example of a Tay blanket is densely covered with butterfly-like motifs in silk on an indigo cotton background. The Tay are a Tai-speaking ethnic group found mostly in northern Vietnam near the border with Guangxi Province, China. This proximity to China explains the similarity in colors and materials of this blanket to those from Zhuang groups in Guangxi. The silk patterning is woven in supplementary weft technique and employs chemical dyes for purples and pinks similar to what we see in Zhuang textiles from China. The original blankets comprise two panels sewn together as a central decorative element, which are bordered with bands of plain cloth forming a wide frame. This blanket is in very good condition, with only small areas of wear, plus a recent border of natural hemp cloth. These are not often seen in clean, fine condition.
