Black Tai (‘Tai Dam’) Headwrap
This is an older example of the traditional headcloths worn by Tai Dam (Black Tai) women in northwest Vietnam. Made of black handspun cotton and embellished with silk embroidery, cotton edging, and cotton and silk ornaments it has an embroidered panel at each end (both on same side). Most of the embroidery is in silk, with the rich sheen of the silk providing an accent against the cotton. Condition is very good. Please note that we show only half of the textile, and that the second end is not shown, but is very similar to the one shown. Newer versions of headcloths are made of commercial cotton and often decorated in garish, bright colors. These cloths display well on tables or walls, or could be worn as a scarf or shawl, or the ends cut and made into pillows.
