  • Black Tai (‘Tai Dam’) Headwrap

Black Tai (‘Tai Dam’) Headwrap

This is an older example of the traditional headcloths worn by Tai Dam (Black Tai) women in northwest Vietnam. Made of very dark, indigo-dyed, handspun cotton and embellished with silk embroidery, cotton edging, and cotton ornaments it has a large embroidered panel at each end (both on same side). Most of the embroidery is in silk, with the rich sheen of the silk providing an accent against the cotton. Condition is very good. Please note that we show only half of the textile. Newer versions of headcloths are made of commercial cotton and often decorated in garish, bright colors. These cloths display well on tables or walls, or could be worn as a shawl, or the ends cut and made into pillows. (Please see Howard, Michael & Kim Be; Textiles of the Daic Peoples of Vietnam; White Lotus Press 2002; p. 78, Fig.5.5, and p. 231-32.)
