Lawa Blanket

This unusual and nicely woven, long cotton panel has been seamed to form a blanket ‘bag’- the feet go into the closed end and the blanket is pulled up and used as a cover. It could be opened up into one long panel, or cut to form a flat blanket. It has attractive natural colors of light pumpkin, olive/yellow, with black, white, indigo, red and olive green blends; ikat forms an attractive band along the edges, and small patterns enliven the linear stripes in the body. The weaving designs and techniques are Karen, although we got it from the Lawa. These two groups live in close proximity in western Thailand. It is of recent production and may have been made under the auspices of one of the NGOs working with weavers to promote natural dyes in the area.

Size: 61 in. x 38 in.
