Hmong Baby Carrier

This classic old Hmong baby carrier has seen some loving use, but is still appealing in its graphic details. Handsewn borders highlight two panels: the top one for behind the baby’s head, is decorated in applique with chain stitch spiral motifs; the lower one is handdrawn batik with red appliqued designs. The outer frame of red cotton is soiled, but could be covered if framed; some of the applique in the top panel is worn. A backing of handspun indigo cotton provides strength and shows that this is not a recent piece.
