Dong Baby Bib
This fine, old child’s bib from the Dong people in Guizhou Province, has strong graphic elements made by appliqué and embroidery techniques, plus embellishments of handwoven silk ribbon. Concentric applique bands are hand-stitched with minute running stitches. Fine decorative cross-like stitches outline the lower panel and ornament the corners. The background is finely woven, handspun, indigo-dyed cotton. No doubt this lovely bib has seen generations of use. (Please see Christi Lan Lin’s Symbolism of Chinese Children’s Bibs; p.68 for a similar example.)
