Netsuke Bats

Framed with the mother’s wings, this lovely grouping of bats is a reproduction of a Japanese netsuke piece, handcarved in deer antler by Wayan Jiwa, a Balinese artist. Bats represent prosperity in Japanese culture. This talented Balinese artist comes from a long lineage of carvers. His preferred medium is deer antler, but he also uses fossilized materials such as mammoth ivory. His work stands out from the many artisans in Bali because it is imbued with a freshness and liveliness that belies the static nature of the material. Each piece is unique and full of detail. Recent work has been inspired by the sculptural elegance and fine details of Japanese netsuke.

Size: 1.75″ dia.
