Betel Basket from Sumba
From the island of Sumba, this old betel basket is of a complex design and weave: a 6-petalled stylized flower ‘sprouts’ from a top rimmed by small three-dimensional shapes; the bottom has woven ‘feet’. Finely woven raised borders add definition and detail to both top and bottom. It is an especially whimsical piece of utilitarian art. Condition is good, tho with a bit of damage to three-dimensional protrusions and the flower. It is priced accordingly.
