Ceremonial Spear ‘lembing’
Handsome and unusual, this spear is from the Minangkabau area of west Sumatra. Called a ‘lembing’, it is used in a regional form of martial arts called ‘silat’. The lovely, skilled workmanship and details on the scabbard and blade indicate that it was used for ceremonial purposes. Made of wood and decorated with carved bone embellishments, this one has a straight blade (with some ‘pamor’). We found these in Bukittinggi in 1996 and have never seen any like them before or since.
