Indonesian Dagger with Parrot Handle
Called ‘badik sewar’ in Indonesia, these short-bladed daggers were used originally in close-quarter martial arts and combat. Symbolizing masculinity, bravery and the warrior mentality, they are also often imbued with supernatural powers. Ornate ones, such as this, are used for ceremonies and other important cultural events. This lovely example features a hilt with finely carved parrot head in horn, with a silver eye for accent and a silver band at the base. The scabbard is decorated with a hand guard of finely carved horn, silver bands around a wood body, and a carved horn end piece. A short, elegantly shaped blade completes the ensemble (note: we have not cleaned the blade). We think this is from Sumatra.
