Ceremonial Spear ‘lembing’
Handsome and unusual, this spear is from the Minangkabau area of west Sumatra. Called a ‘lembing’, it is used in a regional form of martial arts called ‘silat’. The lovely, skilled workmanship and details on the scabbard and blade indicate that it was used for ceremonial purposes. Made of wood and decorated with carved bone embellishments, this one has a wavy blade (with some ‘pamor’) like the famous ‘keris’ knives of Indonesia. We found these in Bukittinggi in 1996 and have never seen any like them before or since. (Also see ATW324 – buy the pair for a special price)
