Yao (Mien) Silver Tool Pendant
When acquired in Chiang Mai 25+ years ago, we were told that this old, handwrought silver pendant was from the Yao/Mien people of northern Thailand.
It is a woman’s cosmetic ‘tool kit’ and is worn suspended from chains around the neck, often along with other pendants. The fish is considered a symbol of fecundity. At the end of handmade chains, the tools (4) are decorated with small hearts at each end of the handle, which is wrapped in twisted silver wire. Over time it has acquired a beautiful dark patina, indicative of high silver content.
