Vermeil Ear-studs from Sumatra
Found in Sumatra, these delicately worked old ear-studs are probably from Aceh. Located on the northwest tip of Sumatra, Aceh was greatly influenced by India and these are good examples of that.
They each comprise two parts that screw together – a front and a smaller back. Using the techniques of filigree and granulation, both front and back include very fine stylized floral motifs, tiny spirals, and twisted wire. Made of silver that has been gilded, there are also vestiges of red staining which was used to add color and dimension to the design.
The age is estimated to be late 19th or early 20th century. Please note that there appears to be some missing elements on the larger front pieces, and the back pieces have a few tiny bits missing.
