The strongly graphic star pattern is nicely executed on this old blanket from Xam Neua in all handspun cotton- dark indigo on natural. Richly geometric it uses lines and checkerboard patterning to great effect. One small original repair is the only real condition issue; otherwise condition is excellent, with a recent addition of handspun hemp border and backing.
Size: Field: 25″ x 30″; OA: 65″ x 42.75″
This wild and crazy blanket comprises two narrow panels of handspun cotton with supplementary weft designs in cotton and silk. The zany designs appear to be a sampler of weaving motifs, with each one done with a pattern repeat, but few repetitions of designs. Lighthearted and fun, this would be especially attractive used to decorate a child’s room. Condition is excellent; a handwoven hemp border and backing is a recent addition.
Size: Field: 54.5″ x 24.5″; OA: 62.25″ x 32.5″
Possibly from Xam Tai, this beautiful old blanket has a bold design in a soft, greyed indigo on natural background. All thread is handspun cotton. It matches very well at the center seam and is in excellent condition. A border and backing in fine, handspun hemp is a recent addition. This is a very fine example of the old ‘phaa hom’, or sleeping blankets.

From the atelier of Carol Cassidy, in Vientiane, this beautiful runner is handwoven of fine silk in rich, harmonious colors. Elegant patterning in supplementary weft finishes each end and small motifs dot the central field. It can be used as an elegant table runner or as a wallhanging.
Size: Field: 54.4 in. x 15.5 in. not including fringe
From Xam Tai, in Houa Phan province, this skillfully woven, old two-panel blanket has naturally-dyed black cotton supplementary weft designs on a foundation of silk warps with cotton wefts. The attractive design includes a variety of diamonds alternating with rows of stylized plant forms. The middle doesn’t quite match up, but forms an eye-catching meander design. Probably 50+ years old, this piece is in excellent condition. The border and backing of handwoven hemp has been recently been removed- price adjusted accordingly.
Size: Field: 49″ x 29″; OA: 63″ x 43.75″
With its original border of handspun natural cotton, this old blanket from Xam Neua has a lively, eye-dazzling design of multiple diamond motifs. All are woven in handspun, dark indigo cotton thread on a background of handspun natural cotton in two panels. Condition is quite good with minimal soil and no holes.
Size: Field: 62 in. x 44 in. with border / 55 in. x 33.5 in. without border
This lovely old mosquito net border is in good condition for its age. With a border woven integrally with the central panel, it is very carefully made with silk warps and wefts in rich earthy colors. We think it may be from Tai people in Vietnam, as it includes motifs of letters that we often see on textiles from Vietnam. Other motifs include stylized, star-like flowers and an abbreviated lattice pattern. There is some discoloration from soil and a few small holes, but this is overall a very nice example. It could be used intact as a room valance, or cut up for other decorative purposes.
Size: 270 in.+/- (22′-6 in.) x 12 in. (incl. border)
Finely woven of handspun cotton thread, this handsome blanket is from Muang Vaen, an area famous for skillful weaving in Xam Nuea. It comprises two panels with a newly-added handwoven natural hemp backing and border. The natural and black thread on this one is especially fine and allows more intricate detail as can be seen in the various diamond motifs and their concentric outlines. The motifs match quite well at the center seam making a pleasingly graphic composition. Condition is excellent.
Size: 71 in. x 36 in. overall / 60 in. x 25 in. without border
In good condition for its age, this is half a border and can go with TAL460a, or can be purchased separately. It is all silk and with mostly natural colors and a border of silk and cotton in complimentary colors. Stripes fill in between the attractive supplementary weft motifs of animals and stylized flowers. These pieces could be used as window valances or cut up for pillows or other decorative uses. We rarely find old mosquito net borders in good condtion anymore.

Possibly from Tai people in Vietnam, near the border with Laos, this old headcloth is nicely detailed with one end of discontinuous supplementary weft silk on silk, and the other very finely embroidered in an attractive pattern, and edged with silk pompoms. The mid-section is fine, possibly handspun, cotton dyed black, tho it is more of a dark brown, suggesting a natural ebony dye. Interestingly, the fringe has been dipped into different colors to achieve a multicolor effect, rather than have differently colored fringe attached separately. Condition is very good. This piece could be displayed as shown, or made into one-of-a-kind decorative pillows.
Size: 63.5 in. (excluding fringe) x 13.5 in. @ mid-section and 15.5 in. @ end panel 1
