Antique Moulded Clay Pipe
MoreOld moulded clay tobacco pipes like this one have been used for centuries in northern Thailand and Burma by the Karen, Shan and Lawa people, and are thought to be hundreds of years old. They are often found buried in the dirt when preparing fields for planting. The designs on this one are unusual and nicely detailed with simpler, more graphic motifs than we usually see. This one is in good condition without any breakage and appears to have not been used. It would be a lovely addition to a pipe collection.

Bronze 1 Tikal Weight-‘Chinthe’
MoreFrom Burma, this authentic bronze weight is in the form of the mythical beast called a ‘chinthe’ in Burma, or lion/dog – these are also known as “beast” weights. (In Thailand it is known as a ‘singh’.) Such weights are commonly called “opium weights”, but were actually part of a standard system of weights and measurements used for all manner of goods, and officiated by the king and government at the time. Dating from the late 18th-early 19th centuries, this one is a very small-sized 1 tikal weight and weighs 16gm. This size is rare as they are easily lost. The base is square and has no markings other than three horizontal bands encircling the base. It is nicely rendered for its tiny size. There is also a bit of encrusted dirt which we have not removed. It would be nice as part of a trio with ATW309 and 310: Papa Chinthe, Mama Chinthe and Baby Chinthe…a family of chinthe! In fact, they may have all been part of the same set, but we cannot be sure.

Bronze 1 Tikal Weight-Lion
MoreFrom Burma, this authentic bronze weight is in the form of the mythical beast called a ‘chinthe’ in Burma, or lion/dog – these are also known as “beast” weights. (In Thailand it is known as a ‘singh’.) Such weights are commonly called “opium weights”, but were actually part of a standard system of weights and measurements used for all manner of goods, and officiated by the king and government at the time. This one is a different rendition as ATW146 and has the charming detail of a string of ‘beads’ across its chest – perhaps it’s a ‘lady chinthe’. Dating from the late 18th-early 19th centuries, it is a very small-sized 1 tikal weight and weighs 15.5 grams. This size is rare as they are easily lost. The base is octagonal and has no markings other than three horizontal bands encircling the base. It is nicely rendered for its tiny size and pairs well with ATW146, which could be the male version of a chinthe.

MoreThis 10 tikal weight (160 grams) is in the form of the mythical bird called a ‘hintha’ in Burma. Such weights are commonly called “opium weights”, but were actually part of a standard system of weights and measurements used for all manner of goods, and officiated by the king and government at the time. Dating probably from the second half of the19th century, this one was very likely produced by Shan metalsmiths, who were known for their fine weights. The base is hexagonal and has a star sign with 6 points; four horizontal bands encircle the base. It has some nice details: three crests on the head, markings representing feathers on the body, a V-shaped tail, nice shape, a dark silver/grey color and it shows patination on high points.This is a good authentic example of this type.

Details include: single crest on the head, simplified markings representing feathers on the body, a U-shaped tail, elegant shape, a dark silver/grey color and it shows patination on high points especially the eye. This is a good authentic example of this type.

This is a good authentic example of this type in a small size that is less common than larger examples.

Bronze 20 Tikal Weight-‘Chinthe’

Such weights are commonly called “opium weights”, but were actually part of a standard system of weights and measurements used for all manner of goods, and officiated by the king and government at the time. Dating from the late 18th-early 19th centuries, this is a large 20 tikal weight (it actually weighs 318gm), and has a handle. The base is square and has vestiges of a star sign plus three horizontal bands encircling the base. It is rather pitted, but still retains some nice details. There is also encrusted dirt which we have not removed. Larger sizes are less common and this is an authentic example. Note that it could have been part of a set along with ATW310 and ATW146- they have the same details and look great grouped together.

Bronze 5 Tikal Weight-‘Chinthe’
MoreFrom Burma, this bronze weight is in the form of the mythical beast called a ‘chinthe’ in Burma, or lion/dog. (In Thailand it is known as a ‘singh’.) Such weights are commonly called “opium weights”, but were actually part of a standard system of weights and measurements used for all manner of goods, and officiated by the king and government at the time. Dating from the late 18th-early 19th centuries, it is a medium-sized 5 tikal weight and weighs 64gm. The base is square and is encircled by two horizontal bands. Vestiges of a 7-point star sign on the base, as well as a dot-in-a-circle on the rear side, are official marks. For its size there are nice details. There is a bit of encrusted dirt which we have not removed. This is a good, authentic example of this type. Note that it could have been part of a set along with ATW309 and ATW146- they have the same details and look great grouped together.

Hilltribe Opium Collection Set
MoreUsed to score the pods of the opium poppy, and collect the precious sap, this set of tools also includes a sharpening stone for the scorer. These are the real thing, straight from the hills of northern Thailand. The Thai government, with a little help from their friends (US DEA), has done a good job of eradicating the poppy fields, so the people no longer have a use for these tools.

Hilltribe Opium Collection Set in Bamboo Tube
MoreUsed to score the pods of the opium poppy, and then collect the sap, this set of metal tools and bamboo storage tube are the real thing, straight from the hills of northern Thailand. The Thai government, with a little help from their friends (US DEA), has done a good job of eradicating the poppy fields, so the people no longer have a use for these tools. Set includes the tube, two collectiing paddles, and a two-bladed scorer.

Large Hilltribe Opium Scale
MoreUnusually large for this style of scale, this old one is from the hilltribes in northwest Thailand. Completely authentic, it comprises a handsome bone beam with fine calibration markings, attached metal pan, and a heavy rectangular cupraferrous weight with concave corners. All sit in their own compartments in the wooden case which shows much wear and some insect activity. Once ubiquitous, these old scales have become much harder to find, especially in such an unusual size and original condition.
