Khmer Silk Tubeskirts from Cambodia – ‘Sampot Samloy’

The fashion for tubeskirts in Cambodia seems to have followed a royal dictate in neighboring Siam from 1920 which prohibited women from wearing the longer ‘chawng kbun’ as hip-wrappers. Hence, it is probably safe to say that most of these tubeskirts date from after that time.

Woven in a twill weave, and patterned using the laborious ‘hol’, or ‘ikat’ technique, these skirts are of the finest silk and are often colored with natural dyes. Skirts of this quality are no longer easily found in Cambodia. We offer here a nicely varied collection of carefully chosen pieces in good condition. Please enjoy!
